'Delhi Belly' stars bring dark humour to Dubai

Well, it’s that time of summer again when the big films hit the Bollywood screens and the publicity blitzkrieg brings the stars knocking on our doors in Dubai.

After this month’s frenzy, what with Salman Khan strutting his stuff for the world premiere of his hit film  “Ready”, it is now his good mate Aamir Khan’s film “Delhi Belly” to make its presence felt in the emirate with actor (and nephew) Imran Khan to head to our shores on June 23, along with co-stars Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapur.

While Emirates 24|7 has been told that Aamir will not be attending, speculation is rife that wife Kiran Rao, who has directed the song “Switty Tera Pyaar Chaida” from the film, may be appearing alongside the starcast.

The trio, meanwhile, will jet in on Thursday evening from Delhi via an Emirates flight, according to well-placed sources, and check into a popular creek-front boutique hotel in Deira. Following which, they will head to It’s Mirchi nightclub at the Ramee Royal Hotel to meet and greet fan and play judge to a singing competition.

Said Public Relations Manager at Ramee Group of Hotels & Resorts, Renjith Nair: “We are running a contest with our radio partner 89.1FM, where five finalists who have managed to successfully pass the preliminary round over the airwaves, will be asked to sing the track “Bhaag DK Bose” from the film to a live audience.

“Imran, Kunal and Vir will play the judges. The person who manages to sing the longest, non-stop, without breathing will win.”

The winner will get two-night stay for two in Ramee Royal Hotel and win Ramee hampers.

At the event, attendees, which should hit a whopping 800 people according to Nair, will also be able to see exclusive unreleased scenes and songs, along with dancing the night away to the film’s soundtrack.

Those wishing to attend the event must adhere to regular club rules, which is entry to those who are 21 and over.

The stars are scheduled to fly back to Delhi the following evening.

“Delhi Belly is an adult comedy”

Jointly produced by Aamir Khan Productions and UTV Motion Pictures, this highly anticipated satire chronicles the tale of three friends and partners in crime who suddenly find themselves on the hit list of one of the world’s deadliest crime syndicates.

The film has received a lot of negative press ever since shooting commenced, first with Ranbir Kapoor allegedly dropping out saying “Delhi Belly” was too bold for him; following which there were stories circulating that film director Abhinay Deo and Aamir Khan had a falling out over the way the film was being handled.

Imran Khan refuted both claims, saying: “Onscreen images change from film to film. Audiences today are very excited by the prospect of actors doing something different.

“I was never inhibited. This is the first film I shot after “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na”. The truth is that a lot of people just don’t write or make such films. “Delhi Belly” is not a sex comedy but an adult comedy.

“I have watched it [the film] with my parents and fortunately they are cool. My kids will have to be above 18 for me to watch it with them. It’s an A-rated film.”

Also clearing the air over the alleged spat, he said: “People like to say this stuff about Aamir Khan, but the fact is, any director who has worked with him has never had anything bad to say about him. People like to write such stories because it makes for a good copy.”

The movie releases across UAE cinemas on June 30.
