Dubai boy debuts in Bollywood with Yash Raj Films

There’s a saying in Bollywood, “Dream big; just don’t expect those dreams to ever come true.”

In an industry that makes and breaks careers every Friday with the advent of a new film release, few survive the big bad world of Bollywood, unless, of course, you possess luck like that of Shah Rukh Khan or have a legendary father such as Amitabh Bachchan, whose son Abhishek may have delivered five duds in a row but is still going strong.

For Dubai boy Taaha Shah, it seems Lady Luck was shining down on him when he managed to bag not one, but a three-film contract with Y Films, a new division launched by the elite Yash Raj Films that will produce movies by the youth, for the youth. The actor will make his debut next week in his first film, “Luv Ka the End”, which releases in UAE cinemas on May 5.

The capital's New York Film Academy graduate was quoted in the institute’s online blog as saying: “I wasn’t doing very well in business. As the 2008 global financial meltdown hit Dubai, everyone was affected. I lost a lot of money. Financial crises took away whatever I had, so then I tried to do different things but my mind was always on acting. When New York Film Academy opened in Dubai…I joined there.“

Well, even though Shah’s geography maybe a little off, what with NYFA being in Abu Dhabi and all, we will still forgive the boy his gaffe considering his big screen debut is now a week away.

While his acting skills have yet to shine on the silver screen, Shah has however garnered a bit of a reputation as the new ‘item girl’ in Bollywood, with his song “Mutton”.

Sporting a ghagra choli (a cropped blouse and skirt), Shah is expected to even give a tough fight to Malaika Arora Khan and Katrina Kaif, who gyrated their way into millions of hearts with their item songs “Munni Badnam” and “Sheila Ki Jawani”, respectively, last year.

Shah was quoted by Indian newspaper, “Hindustan Times” as saying: “When I was asked to do the item song, I had no apprehensions as I had no other option. I think while getting ready for the shot for the first time, I was nervous. But after that, when I wore the costume, I got into the whole feel of it.”

He added that more than wearing it, he was perplexed how was going to dance in such an outfit. “I’m in competition with Munni and Sheila now and with choreographer Adil Shaikh’s help, I hope to beat them too.”

In the film, Shah will be seen donning the role of Luv Nanada, in what is called an ‘anti-romantic comedy’, which chronicles the story of a quintessential girl-next-door (played by Shraddha Kapoor) in love with him. On the eve of her 18th birthday, she discovers he is not as nice as she thought and she decides to take revenge for her heartbreak.

Directed by newcomer Bumpy, if the film plot sounds suspiciously like that of “John Tucker Must Die”, then you are not alone in thinking that. It is rumoured that Pakistani singer and now actor, Ali Zafar, will also star in a cameo.
