TV series on Farooq the Great planned

With Ramadan barely over, one Dubai television station is already planning next year’s fare.

A biographical series on the seventh-century caliph Farooq the Great will hit screens in Ramadan 2011, the MBC Group announced. 

In a media statement, the company said the TV drama would revolve around the life of the caliph, better known as Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, and the role he played in advancing the spread of Islam. Under his rule, the Islamic empire expanded at an unprecedented rate.

The show is being scripted by Dr Walid Saif and will be directed by Hatem Ali. It will be produced in Arabic.

Ramadan is the most lucrative time of year for television stations, when viewers stay indoors for long periods of time.
