Bollywood 2014: Five movies that deserve to win this awards season…

Top 5 Bollywood movies of 2014. (File)

Bollywood has officially closed 2014, with Aamir Khan’s much-loved ‘PK’ ending with a grand celebration in the UAE.

Some of you may suggest Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Ugly’, but unfortunately we have word that it won’t reach our shores on December 24.

Despite some signs of promise, 2014 has been a fairly unimpressive year with very few movies that genuinely touched our hearts. And, among the few that did, these are our favourites for the upcoming awards season:

Queen

Vikas Bhal gave us a delightful ‘Queen’ to love, applaud and adore.

After being ditched on the eve of her big fat Indian wedding, his queen quickly wipes away her tears, picks up her bags and embarks on her honeymoon alone.

From fighting notorious thieves to making new (and interesting) friends, to taking on boisterous Italian chefs, the Kangana Ranaut-starrer packed in enough spunk to floor us.

Filmistaan

First-time director Nitin Kakkar’s fun but poignant take on two nations divided by religion, but united by Bollywood, comes a close second.

Equipped with two fairly unknown faces, Nitin weaves a tale of friendship and patriotism, laced liberally with clever humour.

Numerous filmmakers have fed off the hatred between the neigbhouring nations with gusto, but none so genuinely insightful like Nitin’s intensely layered screenplay.

Sharib Hashmi and Inaamulhaq lend exceptional charm to the men who dare to ignore border politics for the sake of friendship.

Haider

It’s by far director Vishal Bharadwaj’s bravest take on Shakespeare, one that’s coloured in deep dark shades and flooded with riveting performances.

His Haider is raw, rustic and deeply volatile, much in sync with the disturbed psyche that Shakespeare’s Hamlet flaunts.

Bharadwaj pitches his Shakespearean tragedy against the bloodied battles in Kashmir.

Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan Khan lend the perfect insanity to his bloodied canvas.

Finding Fanny

Homi Adajania’s eccentric tale of love, friendship, deceit and self-discovery is wickedly entertaining.

His oddballs set out on an unplanned adventure in a rickety car to help their timid pal Freddy reunite with his long-lost love Fanny.

Veterans Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapur are exceptionally wicked, while the younger actors are left to grin, glare and pout for the lenses. And, it works!

Highway

Imitiaz Ali’s road trip is stripped of the Bollywood frills and exposes a young girl’s deep desire to live a life meaningful and real.

No amount of riches or influence can bring her happiness.

She uncovers a new reality after being kidnapped by local goons, just days before she was set to marry her sweetheart.

Unsure about what to do with the girl, they take her along with them through a rustic route across Northern India.

What emerges eventually is a movie sincere in texture and treatment, and exposes the devils hidden within our homes.
