Google India’s doodle has today paid tribute to veteran Hindi actress Nargis Dutt on her 86th birth anniversary.

A black-and-white image of the actress holding her dupatta features on the landing page of the website.

Nargis was born Fatima Rashid on June 1, 1929.

She made her screen debut as a child in 'Talash-E-Haq' in 1935, but her acting career began in 1942 with 'Tamanna'.

Nargis’ acting career flourished between the 1940s and the 1960s. Apart from comedy, she also dazzled in many dramatic features alongside celebrated filmmaker Raj Kapoor.

Her performance in 'Mother India' (1957), which is the first Indian feature to be nominated for the Academy Awards’ best foreign language film, was much applauded. She won the best actress at Filmfare awards.

Nargis married actor Sunil Dutt, who played her son in 'Mother India'. Soon, she left the film industry and took on few projects so that she could focus on her family.

She died in 1981 of pancreatic cancer, a few days before her son Sanjay Dutt made his acting debut.

In 1982, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was established in her memory.

The award for best feature film on national integration in the annual National Film Awards ceremony is called the Nargis Dutt Award in her honour.

Her daughters Namrata and Priya didn’t follow her acting career. Priya joined politics and along with her sister published a memoir ‘Mr and Mrs Dutt: Memories of our Parents’.
