Movie Review: Kya Super (Not) Kool Hain Hum – smut not smart

There’s a fine line between witty and obnoxious.

And, writer-director Sachin Yardi, unintentionally, chooses the latter, to turn his supposedly ‘super cool’ adult comedy into a distasteful gag-fest.

Although adult comedies aren’t meant to be virtuous, they aren’t meant to be wincingly appalling either.

His desperation is obvious in his eagerness to assemble and exhibit his personal collection of adult jokes into his two-and-a-half-hour-long screen time, leaving us benumbed.

In fact, his jokes aren’t situational, but sexual innuendos randomly shoved in, with Yardi even forgetting he had a story to tell.

His intentions are just as crass and two-faced as his dim-witted heroes – Adi (Tushhar Kapoor) and Sid (Riteish Deshmukh) – who gang up again, after ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum’, flaunting nothing more than a sheepish, sly grin, filthy tongue and dirty mind.

And, he packs in two slim beauties and a handful of incorrigibly trashy sidekicks and a pug on heat to keep up with the duo’s smutty escapades.

The struggles and situations aren’t of any prominence here, with the focus purely on tawdry humour.

Yardi also takes pot-shots at every Bollywood movie he was clearly incapable of making, with strange, offensive imitations of ‘Paa’, ‘Vicky Donor’, ‘Devdas’ and a handful more, thrown in.

Despite playing a character that’s closest to his real image, that of being a ‘wannabe star’, Tusshar Kapoor is unable to shine, throwing a clear indicator of why it’s time he stepped away from the spotlight.

And, if his excruciatingly, painful facial expressions and dance moves weren’t enough, Tusshar also attempts to recreate his only comic on-screen ‘genius’ as the ‘Golmaal’ series’ dumb loafer by roping in his director-buddy Rohit Shetty for a cameo. But even that falls flat, terribly flat.

His more famous, filmmaker sister Ekta Kapoor too hits rock-bottom despite striking box-office gold with her earlier movies – ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’ and ‘Dirty Picture’. Clearly salvaging brother Tushhar’s dry run at the box-office is a task even his high-profile sister is incapable of fulfilling.

As for Riteish Deshmukh, he struggles to remain inoffensive and funny, despite being given a script that’s utterly cluttered, unfunny and outrageous. His female co-stars, however, weren’t as lucky.

After being exploited with Yardi’s brand of inane PJs, I wouldn't wish it even on my worst enemies. And, that’s saying a lot!
