Hugh Jackman could be handed a licence to kill, with the Australian actor hinting at a future role as 007.

In London for the making of his new film Les Miserables, Jackman admitted he had been approached in the past to become British spy, James Bond, the Sunday Express newspaper reported.

"I got a call from my agent saying 'there's some possible interest in you for Bond, are you interested's" Jackman said.

"At the time I wasn't. I was about to shoot X-Men 2 and Wolverine had become this thing in my life. But I think every male at some point thinks about playing Bond. So it was not right then but it may be right if it comes back. As an actor you've got to keep taking risks."

Incumbent Bond actor Daniel Craig is due to start filming for the latest and 23rd Bond flick, which is expected for release in late 2012.

George Lazenby is the only other Australian to have played Bond, appearing in the 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

It was the male model's single appearance as Britain's suave secret agent, starring alongside Diana Rigg.
