Justin Bieber goes out of his way to compliment Selena Gomez

Justin Bieber thinks Selena Gomez "looked gorgeous" at the Met Gala 2015.

The 21-year-old singer, who split from the brunette beauty last October after more than four years of dating, randomly paid her a compliment while being mobbed by fans in New York City after the event.

While posing for photographs, the Canadian heartthrob told gossip website TMZ.com: "Selena looked gorgeous at the Met Ball."

Despite his comments, the former YouTube star only "exchanged some words" with the 'Slow Down' hitmaker, as they caught up with mutual friends at the glamorous event earlier in the evening.

The former couple appeared to be on good terms but didn't spend much time together, as the Canadian heartthrob was "dancing and having a great time with his friends," including Kendall Jenner, 19, Usher and Hailey Baldwin, who he was also linked to earlier this year.

A source also told E! News: "He hung out with Kendall and that crew a bit as well. Everyone was dancing and having an amazing time."

Selena, 22, admitted late last year that she would always love Justin.

Speaking in November, she said: "I support him. I think I always will. I'm upset when he's upset, I'm happy when he's happy. I don't want anything to ever happen to him bad. It hurts me. That's all."

Justin also previously confessed their difficult split was the inspiration behind several new tracks on his upcoming album, saying: "A lot of my inspiration comes from her. It was a long relationship and a relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about, so there's a lot of that on this album."
