Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has accepted West Bengal (Indian state) government’s proposal to become brand ambassador of the state.

An elated chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, made the announcement of SRK's acceptance of this new role.

She had invited the actor to inaugurate the Kolkata Film Festival last year and there were speculations that he might be offered this new role as a brand ambassador.

Secretariat sources said that the 46-year-old actor had written a letter to the chief minister conveying his acceptance of the proposal,

Shah Rukh is already associated with the state through his investment in IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. He is the co-owner of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

He already has a massive fan following in the state that he frequents as part of his association with the IPL.

Of late Shah Rukh has been visiting Kolkata quite often and this post gives more insight to his visits.

West Bengal hopes to gain from the immense popularity that SRK enjoys not only in the country but also internationally.

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan has also been playing a similar role for Gujarat.

Before his ailment and surgery Bachchan was busy shooting new advertisements for the state tourism department.

It seems state governments need more visible, popular ‘model’, preferably from Bollywood, to represent their state and who better than Shah Rukh and Amitabh Bachchan.
