Legendary Indian singer Manna Dey dies at 94; Bollywood mourns

Manna Dey, one of Indian cinema's golden voices, died in a Bangalore hospital today. He was 94.

Mr Dey was taken to ICU on Wednesday to be treated for respiratory illness and renal failure. He has been in and out of hospital the last few months and was on dialysis in September.

Born Prabodh Chandra Dey in 1919 and known by his nickname Manna, he sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi and Bhojpuri.

Among Manna Dey's best loved Hindi songs were Ek Chatur Naar from Padosan, Zindagi Kaise Hai Paheli from Anand, Ae Meri Zohrajabeen from Waqt and Yaari Hai Imaan Mera from Zanjeer. He often sang for Raj Kapoor, and formed hit partnerships with composers Salil Chowdhury and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Manna Dey received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Awards.

He is survived by his daughters Shuroma and Sumita. His wife, Sulochana, died of cancer last year.

As news spread about the passing away of the legendary singer, the film industry in India mourns.

Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter and expressed his sorrow: "Manna Dey, stalwart of the music world, passes away. Flooded with memories and his songs. In particular his rendition of Madhushala."

"At work but shall keep a minutes silence, in Manna Dey's memory on set before we start .. !!"

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt‏ wrote: "Manna Dey passes away. His voice shall linger forever.R.I.P."

Actress Azmi Shabana: "Manna Dey had a unique voice. He will live on through his songs Ai Meri Zohra Jabeen/ dil ka haal suney dilwala/ poocho na kaise maine RIP."

Trade analyst Kunal Kohli‏ wrote on Twitter: "#mannadey last of the greats,along with Kishore,Rafi & Mukesh,passes away.RIP.'ek chattur naar' to 'ae mere pyaare watan' what a range"

Manoj Bajpayee: "Manna Dey is no more! A great singer! Lets pray for him! My condolences to his family! His music will live for 1000 yrs. RIP"
