We talk about the films that crossed this magical figure.

By the sound of this you may assume this is one of New York’s elite, high-society clubs that thrives on ostentatious ways of living. But, all you need is a blockbuster hit that makes a business of over Rs 100 crore and you are in!

This phenomenon was initially observed with Aamir Khan’s 2008 blockbuster ‘Ghajni’ starring Asin and (late) Jiah Khan in the female leads which made a business of 180 crores at the box office. This created a major buzz in Bollywood and all the other actors especially the Khans pulled up their socks to compete. The tension increased with time as Aamir Khan went on to hit the jackpot with ‘3 Idiots’ with Kareena Kapoor that crossed not just 100 crore but even breached the 200 crore mark, leaving the other actors of Bollywood speechless. Aamir seemed like the undisputed hero of Bollywood, until another Khan stepped in with his film.

Known to be the hero of the masses Salman Khan’s much-awaited ‘Dabangg’ starring the debutant Sonakshi Sinha in the female lead skyrocketed at the box-office in 2010. It sent out the message that there are other actors in Bollywood that can rule the roost. However, surprisingly there was another film that made it to the 100 crore lwhich was Ajay Devgn’s ‘Golmaal 3’ with Kareena Kapoor and a bunch of other comic actors and was the third installment of this series.

2011 had Salman and Asin come together and once again hit the screens with ‘Ready’, another 100 crore grosser to their names and then came ‘Bodygaurd’. While Ajay this time gave a solo 100 crore grosser with ‘Singham’ that revived his on screen image even though it had a tough competition with Hrithik Roshan’s, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’. In this run for the 100 crore club the King Khan of Bollywood was left way behind until he ended up with two back to back hits that crossed the 100 crore mark with ‘Ra.One’ with Kareena Kapoor and ‘Don 2’ with Priyanka Chopra. The year of 2011 crowned Kareena as the undisputed 100 crore queen.

The year 2012 had nine 100 crore-blockbuster films with Akshay Kumar joining the club after ‘Housefull 2’ and ‘Rowdy Rathore’, then Salman Khan with ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ and ‘Dabangg 2’. Even Ajay gave two 100 crore hits with ‘Bol Bachchan’ and ‘Son of Sardaar’ while Shah Rukh managed to reach the club once again with ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. Ranbir Kapoor was the newest entrant to the this club with the success of ‘Barfi!’ . This year proved to be one of the most successful years for Indian cinema with so many back-to-back blockbusters.

2013 has had three movies reaching the club, which are ‘Race 2’, ‘Aashiqui 2’ and the record breaking ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewaani’ which marks Deepika Padukone’s entry to the club. So, here is a toast to the magical number that is the cynosure of all eyes in Bollywood.
