Malayalam actor Kalpana dies of heart attack in Hyderabad

Prominent South Indian actress Kalpana is no more. The 51-year-old National award winning actress is said to have died of heart attack this morning.

She was found unconscious by a hotel staff and was rushed to the hospital, but died on her way.

She was in Hyderabad to attend an award ceremony and was in the midst of shooting two films - one in Tamil and the other in Telugu.

Kalpana started her acting career in 1980 and her first movie - Aravindan's film 'Pokkuveyil' - was released the next year.

She went on to act in more than 300 films and won the National Award in India for the Best Supporting actress in 2012 for 'Thanichalla Njan'.

She was last seen in a Malayalam film 'Charlie'.

Kalpana belongs to a family of artists. Her parents Chavara V P Nair and Vijayalakshmi were both theatre artists.

Her elder sister Kalaranjini and your younger sister Urvasi are both actors - the latter more prominent with sevral lead roles in various South Indian movies.

She was married to director Anil Kumar and divorced in 2012. Kalpana is survived by her daughter Sreemayi.

In this interview (below) to a Malayalam TV channel Kalpana explains her early life, acting career and her personal life.

Condolences have started pouring in from various quarters and on social media.

"RIP Kalpana Chechi! A fine actor and a finer human being! You will be missed forever!!! What a sign off in 'Charlie" said actor Prithviraj in his twitter post.

"Deeply saddened and shocked to hear the sudden demise of one of my fav actress Kalpana Chechi," saida Twitter post by actress Priyamani.

Actor Mammooty took to Facebook to post his condolence.
