Miss Universe 2015: Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach [video]

Miss Philippines named Miss Universe 2015 in a drama-filled pageant.

The pageant's host, comedian Steve Harvey, misread the card which he initially said had Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as the winner.

She was briefly crowned in Las Vegas and started the customary smiling and waving. But not for long.

Harvey awkwardly said "I have to apologize. The first runner up is Colombia."

"Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines," he added, with the Colombian contestant left stumped and the actual winner, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, looking stunned.

What a drama to end the Miss Universe 2015 pageant.

After the crowning, he realised his mistake and called upon everyone's attention to announce Miss Philippines' name as the Miss Universe 2015, he apologised to the contestants, viewers and audiences for the major goof-up.

Harvey: "I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake."

And all on live television with millions watching from Manila to Manchester.

The contestants were not sure if the comedian was cracking a joke at their expense.

After 42 years, Philippines gets its 3rd Miss Universe.

6:34 AM: Why should you be the next Miss Universe? This is the one question that will decide who is the Miss Universe 2015.

6:33 AM: Top three finalist to face the final question to decide who takes home the crown. All three will be asked 'same' question and while one contestant answer the others will be wearing sound proof headphones.

Host Steve Harvey says there will be a surprise judge and introduced the rest of the 77 contestants who will also be able to vote for the winner.

6:27 AM: The top three finalists are Miss Universe USA Olivia Jordon, Miss Universe Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez and Miss Universe Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

Miss Philippines has to answer the military question, Miss France tackles a questtion on terrorism, Miss Australia had to response on use of marijuana.

6:13 AM: The Question&Answer round for the Top 5 finalists.

Miss France, Flora Coquerel, Miss Colombia, Ariadna Guiterrez, Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Miss Australia, Monika Radulovic and Miss USA, Olivia Jordan will now battle it out for the coveted crown in the Question round.

The Miss Universe pageant will crown a new international winner today, months after the annual beauty show was thrust into controversy when then-co-owner Donald Trump made disparaging remarks about immigrants.

Contestants representing more than 80 countries will compete in Las Vegas at the 64th edition of the pageant. For the first time, viewers will have a chance to vote on the winner, rating each contestant in the swimwear, evening gown and interview competitions.

Comedian Steve Harvey is the host of the pageant taking place at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Until recently, the pageant was co-owned by Comcast Corp's NBCUniversal and Trump, who is leading national polls in the 2016 Republican presidential nomination race.

Trump's remarks about Mexicans in announcing his candidacy in June drew sharp criticism, and the Spanish-language network Univision pulled out of a deal to televise the pageant.

Trump, who has sued Univision for $500 million, bought out NBC's stake in the Miss Universe Organization, which produces both Sunday's pageant and the Miss USA contest. He sold the company in September.

Among the contestants is Ariana Miyamoto of Japan, whose father is African-American. Miyamoto's height of 1.73 m (5.7 ft) and bronze skin are unusual in Japan and her selection to represent Japan in the Miss Universe pageant created an online firestorm in her native country.

The panel of judges includes former National Football League great Emmitt Smith, celebrity blog mogul Perez Hilton and 2012 Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo.

The reigning Miss Universe is Paulina Vega of Barranquilla, Colombia, who will crown her successor at the end of the evening.
