Most pirated DVD this Christmas: Twilight Saga

Harry Potter and his friends (his entourage of producers, actually) have reason to be happy – and sad at the same time.

This Christmas, for the first time in four years, a Harry Potter film hasn’t been the most counterfeited. The Harry Potter movie series had been such a rage over the past few years that it was tough for any movie to outshine it – even in the most pirated DVDs list.

Of course, being the most pirated DVD is a sad but largely accurate indicator of the popularity of a movie, believe experts, and that is perhaps why Harry Potter and his fans will be happy and sad at the same time.

The magic of Harry Potter, it seems, has been overshadowed this time around by The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 1), which was the most pirated DVD this festive season.

The Twilight Saga is a series of five romance fantasy films from Summit Entertainment based on the four Twilight series novels by the American author Stephenie Meyer. The films star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner.

The series has grossed over $2 billion in worldwide receipts and consists, to date, of five motion pictures.

And it has emerged that the series isn’t making money just for its producers and actors. It is also serving the piracy business, with the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 1) emerging as the most pirated DVD this Christmas, according to FACT, an anti-piracy industry body.

According to the Daily Mail, the first installment of American vampire series Twilight was the most counterfeited DVD over the festive period.

The film industry’s anti-piracy organisation FACT seized hundreds of thousands of illegal copies of the The Twilight Series: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, it states.
