Sanjay Leela Bhansali wants his 'Juliet' for 'Ram Leela' to be unmarried; another category to qualify for the role is fair complexion.

So when his first choice Kareena Kapoor's wedding date was announced, Bhansali dumped her from the movie.

Bhansali wasn't too keen on having a 'married' female lead in 'Ram Leela'.

Two names then surfaced for the lead heroine: Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra.

Katrina has her plate full with sumptuous and meaty roles. So that left the ace director with dusky Priyanka.

It was reported that designer Anju Modi was working on the costume with Priyanka Chopra.

But, how could Juliet be dusky? Bhansali wanted only an A list heroine to play the female lead.

In comes Deepika Padukone who has just tasted success after 'Cocktail'. Her work has been appreciated both by the audience and the critics.

Times of India reports that Bhansali approached her a couple of weeks ago and Deepika signed the contract, much to her delight.

Deepika adjusted her dates to be available for 'Ram Leela'.

She had earlier booked these dates for the Ekta Kapoor-Karan Johar joint production which still has time to go on the floors; hence she transferred her dates to Bhansali.

Deepika will now have to go through a long workshop in Gujarat understanding the character.

Meanwhile the hero, Ranveer Singh, is not affected with the constant change of his on-screen lady love.
