Representatives for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have confirmed the couple have officially called off their engagement.

It was reported the 'Wrecking Ball' singer and the Australian actor were on a break, and representatives for the former couple have confirmed they are no longer engaged.

According to People magazine, they have been told by representatives that Miley and Liam's relationship is officially over.

It was previously said the couple - who have had a "tumultuous relationship" - were "exhausted" and things weren't looking good for their romance.

A source had said: "They've split for now. Miley and Liam have a very tumultuous relationship and both are exhausted.

"It's a complicated relationship. The wedding is on hold, for now. It's not cancelled but it doesn't look promising."

The 'We Can't Stop' hitmaker had been criticised after her risque performance at the MTV Video Music Awards last month, and Liam was said to be "mortified" after the display.

An insider claimed: "Liam really does care about Miley, but her racy new look and sort of ghetto attitude isn't exactly what he signed up for.

"Her VMAs performance absolutely mortified him and he couldn't be more embarrassed. He doesn't really see anything sexy about what she did on stage."

Miley Cyrus has no time for marriage

Miley Cyrus has appeared to confirm she has parted ways with her fiancé Liam Hemsworth in a new interview by claiming she can't "deal" with a wedding.

The 'Wrecking Ball' singer is said have called off her engagement to Liam Hemsworth after months of alleged arguments over her new image and provocative behaviour, including grinding against Robin Thicke on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards.

In a recent interview, published just as it has emerged she had unfollowed 'The Hunger Games' hunk on Twitter, Miley revealed she has no plans to get hitched in the immediate future.

She told Harper's Bazaar magazine: "I definitely don't have time to deal with a wedding right now. But I will at some point."

The twerk-mad star - who shot to fame on the Disney Channel's 'Hannah Montana' - believes her recent X-rated antics are justified since she was never allowed to act her age while she was growing up in the spotlight.

Miley reasoned: "I was an adult when I was supposed to be a kid. So now I'm an adult and I'm acting like a kid."

The 20-year-old singer also offered her pearls of wisdom about former child star Lindsay Lohan, who has been in and out of rehab facilities in recent years, claiming the troubled actress will never be able to cut toxic people out of her life.

She scoffed: "I'm like, 'Honey, you're going to have to move out of this universe because everywhere you go there are toxic people.' "

Miley also believes her fellow young stars like Justin Bieber need to keep up their headline-grabbing antics.

She laughed: "I'm not saying you need to take a break because you're crazy. I'm saying you need to take a break so you can be crazy."
