Oscars 2015: Lady Gaga like you have never seen before; stunned critics

Lady Gaga deserves the title of ‘Lady’ at this year's Oscar Awards! Here’s why.

Scarlett Johansson introduced a tribute to The Sound of Music - which won five Oscars including best picture in 1966 - celebrating it's 50th anniversary.

What happened next stunned everyone inside the Dolby Theatres.

Gaga, far from the meat-feast and egg-shell shocker, appeared in an elegant white and silver gown, her silver hair cascading down her shoulder and behaved perfectly.

But more than her appearance the 'Applause’ singer wowed everyone hitting every high notes as she belted out a medley featuring The Sound Of Music, My Favourite Things, Edelweiss and Climb Every Mountain in front of the 3000-strong crowd in Hollywood.

The pop diva, known for her avant garde fashion sense and larger-than-life stage persona, never looked and sang better.

Gaga pulled off a show-stopping tribute in the presence of Hollywood’s most elite, including Maria herself, Dame Julie Andrews.

This was arguably the most important gig of her career. Perhaps Andrews put it best when saying, "Dear Lady Gaga, thank you for that wonderful tribute, it really warmed my heart."

Lady Gaga made Chris Pine cry and Dame Julie Andrew appears - it was the kind of performance that Oscar dreams are made of.

A standing ovation at the end of her performance sums up why we say she stunned and silenced her critics.

This poised performance established that Gaga is a star for any age - not just the fickle chart toppers.

Her performance quickly sent Twitter into a frenzy, with everyone heaping praise on the newly engaged star.

“You should be really proud of yourself Gaga, an standing ovation, Julie Andrew's recognition, you killed tonight!”

On Twitter someone wrote, "Gaga made me cry, that was one of the best performances ever. I love her so much, her voice is wonderful. "

"Lady Gaga, you were beyond superb," one fan wrote.

"How can anyone say Gaga's irrelevant when absolutely everyone's talking about her right now.”

"Gaga's performance was like some Disney Movie”

"Gaga blew me away."

"@Ladygaga Beautiful performance! Brought me to tears when #JulieAndrews came out. My favourite moment of the #Oscars so far!"

"Could someone just hand an Oscar to Lady Gaga right now?!!!" said another.

Lady Gaga's 1600-hour dress

Lady Gaga took to her Instagram account last night to share with her fans that her Oscar Awards dress took 1600 hours and 25 people to make.

The 'Applause' hitmaker stood out on the red carpet at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles last night (22.02.15) in her white crystal-embellished gown, which she'd accessorised with red gloves.

She wrote alongside a photograph of her on the red carpet: "I will never forget tonight. #Oscars thank you Azzedine Alaia for this stunning piece. It took 1600 hrs of embroidery and 25 people in Paris, he's never before made a dress for the Oscars.

"What an honor. The gloves were hand dyed Crimson, baby orchid blooms hand painted in my hair and killer pear shaped diamonds by Lorraine Schwartz. (sic).”

For her performance, the newly engaged star enlisted the help of stylist Brandon Maxwell to ensure her outfit was suitably unique.
She opted for a custom made, embellished Alaia gown.
