Kathak legend Birju Maharaj to perform in Dubai, Abu Dhabi

The living legend of Kathak (Indian dance form), Pandit Birju Maharaj will be performing in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

He will be performing in Abu Dhabi on May 22 and at Indian Consulate in Dubai on May 24.

As part of his tour he will be conducting a special workshop for students of Kathak in Dubai on May 23.

The interactive workshop will be a rare rendezvous with the maestro where Kathak disciples of Dubai will learn the nuances of his impeccable style and its many facets from his rich legacy.

He will be accompanied by his foremost disciple Saswati Sen and his Son Deepak Maharaj at the workshop.

The workshop will be divided into Elementary and Advanced Sessions and is open to all Kathak students.

The workshop is the first in the series that has been titled as 'Parampara' (Tradition) and is an initiative by Vaishali Mahisalkar, director of Tapasya Institute for Kathak in Dubai.

Emphasizing on the importance of the Guru-Shisya Parampara (Teacher – Student tradition) which is the traditional way in which knowledge is passed on from generation to generation in Indian art forms, she says the reason to start this is the lack of such initiatives in the country.

"Back home in India, we had the opportunity to learn and grow through workshops with stalwarts. As a teacher myself, I always thought students staying in this part of the world should get the same opportunities.

"We at 'Tapasya' are very happy to announce the launch of 'Parampara Workshop Series' where Kathak students will get a chance to learn different aspects of the art form from leading gurus. It is indeed a great privilege that the God of Kathak will inaugurate this series."
