The Philippines last won the Miss Universe title way back in 1973 when Margie Moran took the title. But the first Filipina to win the crown was Gloria Diaz in 1969.

This year Ariella Arida became the 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe pageant and this is the fourth consecutive year that a Filipina has made it to the Miss Universe Top 5.

Maria Venus Raj of the Philippines was named 4th runner-up during the Miss Universe 2010 August 24, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jimena Navarrete, 22, of Mexico was crowned Miss Universe. This is the second time that Mexico took home the crown; the first time was in 1991 when Lupita Jones won. Incidentally, it was also in Las Vegas where Jones won her crown.

During the question and answer round, actor William Baldwin asked Raj what she did to correct a big mistake in her life. Raj said, "In my 22 years of existence, I can say that (I haven't had a major, major problem) because I am very confident with my family and the love that they are giving to me so thank you so much that I am here. Thank you so much."

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup was the 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe 2011.

Suspsup was widely expected to win the Miss Universe title which was eventually won by Miss Angola Leila Lopes.

During the pageant's question and answer session, she was asked by judge Vivica A. Fox the question: "Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person that you love? Why or why not?"

She replied, "If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person I love is God, who created me. I have my faith and my principles, and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God, too."

Last year Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon emerged first runner-up at the Miss Universe 2012 Christmas-themed pageant that took place at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to social media commentators Janine gave the best reply and was the more deserving one then Miss USA Olivia Culpo.

Responding to a question by Nigel Barker sent in via Twitter, Tugonon was asked: “As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English is a pre-requisite to be Miss Universe”.

Her answer was, “For me, Miss Universe is not about being able to speak a specific language, it’s about being able to influence and inspire other people. No matter what language you speak as long as you have the heart and a strong mind you can become Miss Universe.”

This year 3rd runner-up, Miss Philippines Ariella Arida has emerged as the winner among fans.

Before the competition began Ariella Arida was the hot favourite to win the crown but it went to the winner Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler.

During the final question-answer round Arida was asked by a judge, "What can be done about lack of jobs for young people around the world?"

She replied, "We should invest in education. That is my primary advocacy. Through it we can land good careers in the future. It is the ticket to a better future."

Everyone hoped Ariella Arida would break the jinx this year.

After Miss Philippines Megan Young won the Miss World 2013 title fans had renewed hopes that Arida might bring home the Miss Universe crown as well.

Miss Philippines was crowned Miss World 2013 in a glittering finale on September 28 on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

The top 6 candidates were given 30 seconds to tell the judges why they deserve to be Miss World 2013

Miss Philippines Megan Young said: "Miss World to me treasures the core, guides me to understand people, will use these to my core values. Together we shall help society".

After four consecutive misses Phillippines hopes to conquer the universe in 2014.
