Bollywood actor Salman Khan has arrived in Dubai to attend Arab Indo Bollywood awards despite his recent conviction for a drunken hit and run.

India's most bankable film star was found guilty of culpable homicide and other charges this month for driving his vehicle into a group of five men who were sleeping on footpath in Mumbai in 2002.

One of them was killed. But Khan's five-year jail term was suspended on 8 May pending an appeal, and now it appears the star is free to continue his promotional duties.

Salman was photographed at the Dubai Airport confirming his arrival in the UAE.

Salman Khan will be performing at the first edition of Aiba 2015, which aims at promoting Indian Cinema, art and culture in the Arab world.

He confirmed his date with Dubai through a video message, "I'm going to be in Meydan Dubai on the 29th of May for the Arab Indo Bollywood Awards (AIBA). See you there."

Along with Salman, top Bollywood stars are scheduled to perform at AIBA, including Priyanka Chopra, Jacqueline Fernandez, Varun Dhawan, Parineethi Chopra, Neha Dhupia and Kanika Kapoor.

The event by Benchmark in association with Al Bustan Group, will be hosted by the filmmaker Karan Johar and TV presenter Manish Paul.

Salman has also resumed acting work and has just finished filming his new movie 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' opposite Kareena Kapoor.

The actor's appeal against his conviction and sentence is expected to be heard in July.

It is understood Khan's lawyers filed an application seeking travel permission last week after the sentencing court in Mumbai ordered him to surrender his passport as part of bail conditions.

On 26 May, the Bombay high court granted him permission to travel, providing he informs the Indian consulate in Dubai about the details of his trip and files a security deposit of about 200,000 rupees (Dh11,483).
