The actress known for working in soft porn movies, the Southern sex siren, Silk Smitha was a mystery for people. Ekta Kapoor's film 'The Dirty Picture' is based on her life and is much in news these days. Vidya Balan has already started shooting for the character of Silk Smitha that she portrays on screen. A lot has been said about her role in the film but Vidya has preferred not to give much away.

When you dressed up as the character for the first time, what was your immediate reaction?

This is when the audience will react, not me. Since the time I have started the film, I feel like Silk (Smitha). You can say, a bit silk and slippery. And then Silk was born so that men have sleepless nights.

From whatever you have seen so far, have you liked it?

I liked it very much because this was exactly the character that we wanted to create.

Have you seen Silk Smitha’s movies?

I have seen 'Sadma' and some songs from her South Indian movies. But then she hardly leaves any scope for imagination. I feel that Silk is the wild side of every female, and whenever necessary she is soft hearted too. She was funky and could even amaze you with her straight face.

Did you have to put on weight to look like her? According to reports, padding was used to increase your weight.

For this you will have to watch the movie. I only know that being a woman I love my curves, and curves love Silk. Let people say whatever they want. The film is not about weight but about what sells. Do I need to say anything more?

But being an actress are you not worried about gaining weight, since losing it is a task?

I will be beautiful only when I look like the character I play. Hence I don't think anything beyond movies.

This character is way different from your real life. What homework did you have to do to play the role aptly?

Playing a specific character is not a big challenge. This role is different from my true self and hence it becomes all the more interesting. Being an actor I too want to experiment with different roles and characters. Bette Davis is my inspiration and like her, I want to play a different role every time. In Sujoy Ghosh's movie 'Kahaani', I play the character of a pregnant woman who is in search of her husband.

And hence in a short while you have experimented with several different characters...

I believe I have been lucky here. It is with god's grace that I am able to do it all and even the audience is appreciating my work.
