Sonam's radical saree at Cannes scores over Aishwarya's jacket saree

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor has mastered her red carpet avant-garde style, be it in India or at the French Reviera.

Before her solo appearance as Bollywood's official representative at the opening ceremony at Cannes Film Festival, we knew Sonam had something up her sleeves as far as fashion is concerned.

She proved us right when she sashayed the red carpet in a saree. Well, not just a saree, a saree jacket!

An avant-gardist, Sonam has the confidence to pull off any look, and she is slowly emerging as the new style chameleon in India.

Her love for vintage and ethnic is evident; the lassie mixed contemporary with traditional almost bordering at over-doing it.

She wore a delicate old-world white and gold lace creation by Anamika Khanna. The saree was beautiful but the long trailing baroque-effect jacket added drama to the entire costume.

Her flamboyant look was complete with a huge nose ring, dark maroon lips and dramatic winged eyes. The oversized nose ring and her jacket were rather distracting.

All these experimental streaks remind us of a certain Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who also paired her Cannes saree with a jacket last year.

Aishwarya wore an offwhite georgette chikan saree with sequins and zardosi borders worn with a multi coloured silk embroidered zardosi blouse. This Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla number was beautiful but only if she had draped the saree in the regular way. Must add the fact that her baby flab also played a role to spoil her saree look.

Ash is yet to make her Cannes appearance this year and we are keeping our fingers crossed.

How can we not mention Vidya Balan as she makes her debut at Cannes.

If any one had any doubt about Vidya Balan's nationality, she erased it forever.

Desi girl Vidya wore her Indianness on her sleeve in a monochrome, embroidered outfit by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. She accessorized it with a heavy gold-diamond necklace and a bindi. But she just over did it with the veil draped over her head. Her covering act was disappointing.

On her next outing Vidya flaunts a huge Marathi nose ring that looked completely unnecessary.

Aishwarya's style statement at Cannes has always received a lot of flak. But saucy Sonam Kapoor scored high on style sense from her first appearance itself.

For us it is Sonam's elegance that outdoes the rest.
