Indian regional actress Swastika Mukherjee is all set to make her Bollywood debut opposite Sushant Singh Rajput in 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy'.

But that's not why she is in news.

Dibakar Banerjee's leading lady was allegedly caught shoplifting in Singapore.

The actress, who was in Singapore to attend a Bengali film festival, was caught tucking in a gold earring worth $255 in her handbag at a jewelry showroom.

The entire act was reportedly caught on CCTV cameras of the jewelry store.

After security officials caught Swastika shoplifting at Mythology Boutique, the boutique owner, Apsara Oswal wrote to the Darpan Film Festival authorities suggesting CCTV footage in her shop had captured the theft.

A single mother, Swastika was in news earlier for alleged suicide attempt in May this year.

The actress, however, said that she went shopping with her friend and had bought the jewelry, reports NDTV.

Swastika even claimed to have receipts for her purchases but was unable to produce any to prove that she had bought the 'shoplifted' pair of gold earrings.

Swastika is believed to have told the founder and chairperson of Darpan Film Festival that she is innocent but would pay for the 'missing' earrings as she doesn't want to be embroiled in any controversy.

According to reports, the shop owners did not want to lodge a formal police complaint, but simply wanted the actress to either pay for the earrings or return them.

Singapore has very strict laws against shoplifting. If convicted, the guilty can be sentenced to a jail term of up to 10 years.

Even shoplifting of items worth less than $45 can amount to a jail term of three months.
