The official trailer for 'Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation' is out, complete with a shirtless Tom Cruise playing hero Ethan Hunt.

At 52 Tom Cruise is still flying high - literally - in the first trailer for Mission: Impossible 5.

The ageing star clings onto the side of a plane as it takes off as he returns to the role of super spy Ethan Hunt in the new film, titled 'Rogue Nation'.

Returning cast members include Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn and Jeremy Renner as William Brandt as the gang gets back together to take down the Syndicate, the titular evil rogue nation.

The cast also includes Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson (Starz's 'The White Queen').

The film, which was helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, is being produced by Skydance Productions and Bad Robot while Paramount is handling distribution.

As Variety reported on Sunday, that title could be a contentious one. Disney recently announced that its 'Star Wars' spinoff will be named 'Rogue One,' despite Paramount calling dibs on its subtitle first.

After his stint on Dubai's Burj Khalifa, Cruise, who plays Ethan Hunt in the franchise, is seen moving from the world's tallest building to the friendly skies in the first teaser of "Rogue Nation".

The 52-year-old is holding onto the side of a plane as it takes off, providing another set piece to haunt viewers with a fear of heights.

In addition to Hunt's daring airplane ride, the rest of the trailer overflows with motorcycle chases, intrigue and warnings about a shadowy organisation known as the Syndicate that must be taken down.

The fifth 'Mission: Impossible' was originally slated to debut in December 2015, but Paramount moved the release forward by five months, from Christmas to July 31, 2015.
