A court has granted Filipino basketball star James Yap visitation rights to his son but he has to stay away from his estranged wife, the actress-TV host and presidential sister Kris Aquino.

Yap’s lawyer, Lorna Kapunan, has told journalists that the Makati Regional Trial Court had granted Aquino’s appeal for a permanent protection order (PPO) against Yap, who has to stay at least 100 metres away from his son’s mom.

Kapunan explained that Aquino, the youngest among the four sisters of President Benigno Aquino III, had filed two appeals for a PPO. The court decision for the appeals was handed down on May 21.

“One for Kris Aquino and the other was filed in behalf of their son, Bimby,” the lawyer was quoted by the ‘Philippine Daily Inquirer’ on Friday as saying. “The court granted the first but denied the latter.”

Yap, who plays with San Mig Coffee, can visit his son from 4pm to 8pm on Wednesdays and 4pm on Fridays up to Saturdays.

“The court said it was in the best interests of the child to allow both parents to see him growing up,” Kapunan said.

Aquino and Yap have been estranged following reports that the latter had carried on a relationship with a staff member in a beauty clinic.

In her complaint filed with the court, Aquino had alleged that Yap was a bad father, and that he had tried to sexually assault her during one of his visits to their son.
