Weekend in Dubai: Head bang at IC concert

Published
By Bindu Suresh Rai

If last week was all about fun for big ones, this week we have also squeezed a family fun day for those little mites.

Not that this means we have forgotten all of you who had a stressful time last week, braving the heat and traffic at Janet Jackson’s performance on Yas Island.

This weekend, we have India’s legendary rock band Indus Creed performing live in our neck of the woods, along with a fantastic stage adaptation of John Gray’s, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.”

But what we are really rooting for are those brave women who will take to the ramp on Friday at BurJuman, as they share their stories about surviving breast cancer.

Come on Dubai, let’s all pitch in and show our support.

Thursday – October 20

Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus

Anyone who has been in a relationship will probably be sniggering in their seats, while a few others might just give in to the urge of an elbow nudge or five.

This, my dear friends, is extremely witty and eye-opening stage adaptation of John Gray’s bestseller novel, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”.

Simply sit back and watch the pages unravel a satire like no other as the narrator progressively describes all these everyday situations and explains why they are so frustrating and what we can do to get through them better.

The show runs from Thursday through Saturday, from 8pm at the First Group Theatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

Tickets are priced at Dh150 and Dh175. Call: 050 624 7392

Friday - October 21

Pink Survivor Fashion Show

If there ever was an evening to turn out and show your support, this is it.

BurJuman once again will host the Pink Survivor Fashion Show, an annual event where breast cancer survivors walk the ramp to create awareness for a cause close to their hearts, and prove that life does go on; they are living proof.

The event also aims at generating awareness amongst women that early detection can save lives. So sign up for that mammogram today, especially when Welcare Hospital is jumping in on the bandwagon and providing 50 per cent discounts n them.

The Pink Survivor Fashion Show starts at 7.30pm in BurJuman.

Indus Creed Live

Fans of India’s most celebrated rock super group, Indus Creed, will be happy to know that the band is on its way for a head banging concert in Dubai since its reunion last year.

Looked upon as the pioneers of Indian Rock, Indus Creed shot to back in 1993 with a line-up that included Uday Benegal (vocals), Mark Selwyn (bass), Mahesh Tinaikar (guitars), Zubin Balaporia (keyboards) and Jayesh Gandhi (guitars).

After recorded three highly successful albums, the band members went their separate ways.

However, since reuniting in 2010, with two news band mates in Rushad Mistry and Jai Row Kavi, the members are currently working on their highly awaited 4th album, which will be released towards the end of 2011.

To catch these Indian rock legends live, head to The Music Room, Majestic Hotel on October 21 from 6pm. Local bands are also expected to perform.

Suggested tracks for your Indus Creed iPod playlist includes, “Pretty Child”, “Trapped”, “Sleep” and “Top of The Rock”.

Saturday – October 22

Oliver, The Musical by Lionel Bart

Everyone’s favourite tale by Charles Dickens comes to a stage near you this festive season, and we can certainly vouch and say, this is one performance that promises fun and entertainment for the whole family.

Starring Victoria Borasio and Laura Qu. The title role of Oliver is played by Callum Bell, and the Artful Dodger has been essayed by the impish Joel Gray; the show is directed by Naim Zaboura.

Catch the performances from October 22 until 29 at the Centrepoint Theatre, Mall of the Emirates, with a special matinee show at 2.30pm and evening performances at 7pm.

Tickets cost Dh120. Call: 050 854 9782
