When the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi married actress Sharmila Tagore on 27 December 1967, she was dressed in a traditional wedding ensemble that was handed down to her by her mother-in-law as the Pataudi tradition.
The traditional outfit was first worn by Begum Sajida Sultan of Bhopal at her own wedding in 1939; she gifted it to her daughter-in-law Sharmila Tagore.
Maintaining the tradition of the Pataudi household, now Sharmila will pass on the traditional wedding ensemble to her son's would-be wife actress Kareena Kapoor.
Sharmila reiterated that Kareena will be wearing her wedding outfit and the royal jewelry.
There were speculations that Kareena might ask her favorite designer Manish Malhotra to design her dress. Again news is rife that designer Ritu Kumar is working on her wedding outfit. All the information is half baked, though.
In fact, both Manish Malhotra and Ritu Kumar are involved in dressing Kareena. Manish will be designing few outfits that Kareena will wear during the other wedding rituals and reception.
While under the guidance and supervision of Ritu Kumar, 12 skilled craftsmen have worked for over 4 months to restore Begum Sajida Sultan of Bhopal's wedding dress.
The vintage outfit needed lot of work. There is usage of gold Benaras fabric in the ancient outfit. The traditional bridal ensemble will include a kurta, farshi paijama and dupatta made of rust and gold tissue. To ensure the outfit is given a contemporary look, a team of 12 old craftspeople who fathom the stitches and their use on three dimensional surfaces, were engaged for four months. The veil remains original and has been repaired to form the final part of the ensemble.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor's registered marriage ceremony will take place on October 16. Thereafter there will be a formal dinner on Oct 18.
Since the bride's family is from Mumbai the wedding will take place in Mumbai itself.
