The e-gate card that is used at the arrival terminals for easy immigration clearance in Dubai will soon be phased out and replaced by a more advanced system called, Iris on the Move (IOM).

The system will be fully operational in about a year and a half.

Colonel Khalid Nasser Al Razouqi, Assistant Director-General of e-Service at Dubai’s Naturalisation and Residency Department told Emirates 24|7 that the next one year will be used for development, while it will take an additional six months for testing the system.

Once installed the IOM biometric systems will enable you to simply walk past the immigration counter at the airport, without even having to stop, pause or look at a particular direction into a camera.

“We are bidding for the Expo 2020 and we need to be fully prepared to manage the increase in the number of visitors into the country,” said Col Al Razouqi.

Another feature that is being showcased at the stand is the Smart Gate system, that enables a passenger arriving at any of the Dubai airports to clear immigration by simply placing their passport copy at the scanner.

The system however is currently installed in Terminal 3 of the Dubai International Airport but will be incorporated in other terminals during the next phase.
