Aqeel Ahmed Al Najar, head of the document check section at the Forensic and Criminology Department at Dubai Police, has warned on the increase of credit card forgeries, especially in cases in which it has become difficult to differentiate between fake and original cards.

He added that 19 forgery cases were registered this year until June compared to 34 in the first five months last year. Fake cards cases were 59 at the end of last year, while credit card forgery cases were 10 during the first five months of 2008 and reached 31 cases at the end of 2008.

Al Najar said credit card is prone to forgery, especially when perpetrators get access to numbers in the system and restore them in other similar cards, adding that they have even managed to imitate the guarantee measures in original cards, making it so difficult to detect.

He referred to spread of such crimes in the UAE, but said the criminal investigation squads can track down perpetrators given fixed cameras that can help in this respect.
