Ever wonder how celebs such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Cindy Crawford appear to have picture perfect hair, even on a hot humid summer day?

Celebrity hairstylist to the stars Asgar Saboo, who’s styled the tresses of the above-mentioned celebrities in the past, says that even as we love indulging in post-beach pampering sessions and slathering our skin with tropical scented concoctions, our hair care is often eclipsed by our obsession with radiant summer skin.

According to Saboo and Style Director at the Daniel Galvin Salon in London, sun, chlorine and humidity are the summer foes of great hair and the key to avoid damage is to start a protective hair-care routine in early spring and follow it during the hot months to come.

The duo give top five tips to beat the UAE summer heat and de-stress those tresses:

1. Make sunscreen for hair your beach bag beauty essential. UV rays can wreak havoc on your tresses, leaving them frizzy, faded and brittle. Choose a good protective spray and apply generously to protect your hair from being scorched.

2. Get into the air-dried hair look. Spare your locks some heat and give your hair dryer a summer break.  It’s the perfect time to let your hair dry naturally and experiment with adventurous summer beach waves. To avoid frizz, Asgar recommends towel drying your hair thoroughly and applying a leave-in conditioner. Twist the damp hair into a bun and secure it with a clip to dry to achieve tousled fun-loving summer waves.

3. Coconut oil is the holy grail of summer hair care. Packed with natural goodness, it makes for the perfect frizz antidote. Asgar suggests using it as a leave-in conditioner to make up for the summer excesses. Coconut oil penetrates into the hair fibre, bringing out deep conditioning from inside out and acts as a potent moisture lock. Put a small amount of coconut oil in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Apply on to the ends of your hair and carefully work your way up, concentrating on the ends and using very little or nothing at the roots.

4. Seal in your colour with the help of colour lock treatments. Asgar recommends using keratin treatments to fight back the bleaching effects of the sun and keep your highlights looking sun kissed. Keratin builds a protein shield that helps strengthen, repair and seal in the hair colour. Radiance masks are also a good option to protect the hair colour.

5. Don’t underestimate the use of fresh water. Salt water and chlorine are often responsible for the dreaded ‘summer frizz’. According to Asgar, by drenching your hair with fresh water before and after a swim, the hair is less likely to absorb salty water or chlorine. It’s also a good idea to keep a spray bottle with fresh water to refresh the hair whilst sunbathing.
