6 apps to save face after a 'big night'

You may not be able to avoid the hangover, but at least you can delete the evidence.

A new iPhone app lets you wind back the clock to before you started social networking while sozzled.

Of course, it's not the first app made to protect against the by-products of a big night out.

There's a whole range of apps out there to make your smartphone stop you being dumb after a few drinks.

Here are a few of our recommendations for ensuring that what goes on at the pub stays at the pub this weekend.

Last Night Never Happened

iPhone

Facebook and red wine don't mix, no matter how good an idea it might seem at the time.

However if you do wake up and remember logging on to Facebook or Twitter, this app will let you wind back the clock.

Just choose a number of hours to destroy, and voila - it will delete everything you posted to those sites during that period.

The Bad Decision Blocker

iPhone

They say the best cure is prevention, and we agree. Better than saying sorry the next day is never having drunk-dialled someone in the first place.

Before you go out, choose individual contacts to block - old flames, perhaps, or new crushes - and the app will stop you calling or messaging them until morning.

DrunkBlocker

Android

This app is similar to The Bad Decision Blocker, but for Android phones. It will lock certain contacts for a time period so you don't drunk-dial them.

However it doesn't appear to work for messages, so you'll still have to show a bit of self-restraint.

Don't Drunk Dial

BlackBerry

Another drunk-dial prevention app, but this one's for BlackBerry users. It has a bit of a twist as well.

Rather than blocking individual contacts, the app will give a makeshift sobriety test whenever you try to make a phone call.

For the call to go through, you'll have to enter a password in a short amount of time. It has some exemptions, including emergency numbers.

Or, you could be silly...

Ringr Roulette

iPhone

If you're going to embarrass yourself, you may as well do it properly. There's an app for that, and this is it.

Ringr Roulette lets you choose a random contact from your address book to drunk-dial. Just load it up, shake your iPhone and wait for it to start ringing.

There are a few basic safeguards. You can exclude certain contacts from the game and set a time-limit in which to "chicken out" from calling whoever pops up.

And if all else fails...

Texts From Last Night

Website

Sit back, take a deep breath and remember that you're not the only person who made a fool of themselves last night.

Texts From Last Night collects and publishes the best late-night messages - without any names attached to them, thankfully.

The best thing about the site is that you're sure to find someone who came off worse than you did.

For example: "Woke up to the sound of my own moans coming from the TV... evidently it was videotaped."
