As the summer sets, the changing weather raises a slight caution to people. Now the cool and dry approaching winter in the Middle East has become a cause of concern in terms of health.

'Emirates24|7' spoke to doctors in the UAE to know more about health related challenges and precautions to be taken to prevent them.

In the Middle East 33 per cent children suffer from respiratory tract allergies, a paediatrician said. Inhaling dust particles could lead to infections such as bronchitis, sinusitis, pneumonia and laryngitis.

“Viral induced asthma is seen mainly in children during winter. However, unlike asthma this does not require long-term treatment,” said Dr M S Vishwanathan, specialist pediatrician, Modern Family Clinic.

Instead of wearing woolen clothes thermal wear is more is most recommended during winters.

He added “Woolen clothes attract dust particles which could lead to respiratory allergies. Parents should make their children wear two cotton t-shirts or a pull over. The body has to generate more heat, hence the child has to be exposed to a neutral environment and be optimally covered.”

Like kids, even adults are prone to health issues during winters, the most common among them being flu and common cold.

“Patients are more likely to have flu and allergies due to dust and cold. We recommend patients take flu vaccine in August, to help protect them through the months of winter,” said Dr. Malini Joel, general practitioner.

Doctors also suggest washing hands regularly and covering ears as some of the best ways to protect oneself from flu during winter. Those with a history of asthma and wheezing should be a little more cautious as the cold weather increases the chances of asthma.

Those suffering from rheumatism and arthritis, especially the aged, should take utmost precautions as cold weather aggravates the joint pains, doctors say. Wearing proper knee caps, gloves and socks are the best ways to avoid severe pain.

Dr Manisha Phadke, general practitioner, said: “Protection is most important for people suffering from rheumatism and arthritis. They could also go for Ayurvedic oil massage to avoid severe pain. However, in case of intense pain they should take anti-inflammatory after consulting their doctor.”

Doctors repeatedly advise people to avoid cold drinks and air-conditions during harsh winters. Instead warm beverages and wearing sufficient amount of warm clothing could help avoid major ailments.
