Dubai's hypertense: Emiratis, Filipinos top list

Majority of Dubai residents suffer from hypertension, with one among 15 individuals diagnosed with the condition.

A Dubai Household Health Survey conducted by DHA revealed  6.7 per cent individuals in Dubai have hypertension. 12.1 per cent of those in the 40-59 age group suffer from the condition, while 31 per cent of those above the age of 60 battle the lifestyle disease.

The results also showed 16.9 per cent to be Emiratis; 9.14 per cent other Arab nationals. And among expatriates 6.24 per cent Filipinos suffer from hypertension.

According to Amal Salim Al Halyan, Senior Research Specialist, Health Policy and Strategy Sector at the DHA, education and income group also seem to have an effect.

Those with no formal education formed 11.6 per cent while only 8.3 per cent of graduates and post-graduates suffered from hypertension. And 15.4 per cent in the high income group and 5.2 per cent in low wage earners reported the disease.

Laila Al Jassmi, CEO of Health Policy and Strategy Sector at the DHA said, previous survey results revealed that only 19 per cent of Dubai’s population exercise sufficiently.
