At a time when fitness is universally recognised as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle, a survey conducted in the emirate gives alarming results.

Only 19 per cent of Dubai's population practicipates in sports or engages in workouts to maintain fitness, according to a recent survey conducted by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

The survey, carried out by the DHA in cooperation with the Dubai Statistics Centre, contacted 5,000 households in order to identify health issues and healthcare in the emirate, 'Emarat Al Youm' reported.

Speaking about the findings, Laila Al Jasmi, Executive Director of health policies and strategies, DHA, said women in the city surpassed men in terms of engaging in fitness activities as the survey shows that 25 per cent of women, compared to 15 per cent of men, regularly exercise to maintain their fitness.

The result also showed that only nine per cent of people above the age of 60 are engaged in any sort of physical activity.

Among different nationalities living in Dubai, Filipinos are the most fitness conscious followed by Europeans and Arabs.

However, only 19 per cent of the Emiratis were found to be interested in maintaining fitness.
