A Dubai-based Emirati doctor has revealed he and Western colleague had discovered a revolutionary technique in the prevention of stroke by using electric shocks to deal with foci responsible for drug and alcohol addiction in the brain.

Dr Mohammed Omar Abdullah, Director of Al Amal psychiatry hospital in Dubai, said the team intends to present their new findings to the Committee for the Nobel prize in medicine once tests are completed.

Abdullah said his team comprises doctors from Germany, Britain and Canada and that they had spent years in research to treat stroke and related diseases.

“The new technique involves the use of electric shocks which are directed at foci in the brain responsible for drug and alcohol addition to eliminate them… this technique can treat stroke and many other difficult neurological diseases,” he told the Dubai-based Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm'.

Abdullah, who had studied medicine in Britain and Germany, said the team succeeded in marketing some new medical equipment used in the treatment ofstroke and associated diseases in Europe in 2005.“Now we have discovered a new technique and it will be marketed soon…this involves the use of electro-magnetic technology in the treatment of stroke, epilepsy, autism in children, and other diseases with surgical intervention. Unlike traditional treatment, this technique has no side effects or complications.”

Abdullah said the new technique would soon be marketed on a large-scale basis after it had been confined to some cases.“This is because we have just invented this technology and it poses a real threat to drug companies which will suffer from huge losses once this alternative technique becomes widespread,” he said.
