Your genes can show how to lose weight…

How much would you give for a personalised diet that specifies what you need to eat and avoid eating based on your genetics?

It is possible, and you do not even have to visit a hospital. Put your samples in an envelope and the postman will do the rest.

One diet may work for one person while it does nothing for another.  This is because the effect of certain weight loss methods partly depends on a person's genes, explained Mohannad Malek, CEO of Camscreen.

"For some people, it is cutting out carbs, while others might see more results by cutting out sugars.

“For some people doing sports is effective, while others may find that they are unable to burn fat at a workout.”

In order to find out what works best for a person, several factors should be taken into account.

Nutritional metabolism, regulation of appetite and anxiety, ineffectiveness of sport activity, and vitamin genetic deficiencies are among the factors that need to be included.

Mohannad, who is currently earning his doctorate in oncology cancer studies at the Cambridge University, said there are also tests to analyse whether a person is at greater risk of developing a certain disease compared to the average risk.

From your genes, some 25 diseases can be considered, including diabetes, coronary heart disease, arthritis, several forms of cancer, obesity and migraine.

The tests are based on the study of certain genetic sites that vary between individuals with an incidence equal to or higher than 1 per cent, enabling it to identify DNA markers associated with diseases or conditions, describes Mohannad.

“These test inform people that they might want to visit the doctor and see if there are any symptoms. If not, it is now within their knowledge that they should look out for these symtoms,” said Mohannad.

The tests for potential diseases and weight remedies range in cost from Dh2,000 to Dh2,500 approximately, he added.

In both cases a kit is sent with the proper equipment to gather the samples.

After the results are known, the person is sent an evaluation of personal health, or in the case of the diet programme,a detailed diet plan and list of foods and their ranking according to their benefit to the body.
