Business Bay residents forced to pay Salik

Construction forces several access points into the district to be closed earlier this month

Several Business Bay residents are crying foul over new roadworks that have blocked all other access points in and out of the area, forcing them to use the Al Safa Salik tollgate.

Some say access point to enter the district from the toll free Al Khail Road is still open, but the exit road is blocked off, forcing them to re route their cars and head to Sheikh Zayed Road.

“Even a run to the grocery store is now forcing us to drive through the tollgates,” said Akanksha Mehta, a resident of Executive Towers in Business Bay who said the routes were blocked as early as the first week of April.

“I have a two-year-old child so you can imagine the number of times we have to rush in emergency supplies – be it for diapers, baby formula or cough medicine if she is sick.

“We moved to Business Bay because the rent was more affordable and the location was perfect for both my husband and my work commute. But this is hurting our pockets.”

Mehta calculated that between her husband and her car, their daily average now in just Salik fees alone is Dh16 each.

“If this continues we will be forced to pay Dh350 a month in just Salik!” she said.

Another resident, who did not wished to be named but also resides in one of the Executive Towers’ blocks, said: “I don’t believe this excuse of construction work is really true. All I have seen are sandpits being shifted from one place to another, but no actual roadwork ever taking place.” The two-year-old resident of the neighbourhood blamed the Roads and Transports Authority.

Roads exist

Navin Punjabi, an independent real estate consultant said: “Let me clarify... there is a way in and out of Business Bay district without crossing Salik, but the main problem is that people don’t know of the existence of such roads.

“The main access point into the area was via Downtown, which was also not a proper constructed  road, but rather a dirt track that was used by construction vehicles. Now that access has been blocked because of the roadworks and people are crying foul.

Punjabi revealed roads that few know exist into and out of Business Bay, which include a dirt track that leads you from Eppco station into the area.

“There is an unconstructed road there that many people don’t know leads directly into the district.

“Another is an entry way through Al Khail Road also exists, but the road is unmarked so again, those who explore the area long enough know it’s there. Plus, the arteries reading to this proper road are unconstructed, hence causing the confusion.”

These roads were verified by this reporter.

When Emirates 24|7 contacted the RTA, calls went unanswered.

The RTA reportedly collected Dh776 million in Salik fees in 2009 compared with Dh669m in 2008 and Dh214m over six months after July 2007, when the toll was introduced in Dubai. Car owners are charged Dh4 for passing through the gates.

Punjabi says irrespective of the Salik woes, the district is still hot property due to its location, spacious apartments and affordable rents, revealing that the area’s popular Executive Towers currently are 85 per cent occupied.

“Business Bay boasts a prime location, with average rents ranging between Dh60,000-Dh70,000 for a one-bedroom flat, Dh70,000-Dh90,000 for a two-bedroom and Dh95,000 to Dh110,000 for a three-bedroom. It doesn’t get better than this.”

Guys live away from Business Bay, enjoy life, use the metro, move to where a metro station is accessible by foot. No Salik, no traffic... nothing.
  • WD 20 April 2011 13:39 0 0
@Wisam - I have done the same too and now still awaiting further response.
  • Wisam 19 April 2011 10:06 0 0
I submitted a complaint to RTA about not having a free exit in Business Bay area. They responed very well, yet they informed Emaar is the one who shut the small roundabout next to the Millenium Tower. I sent a complaint to Emaar but no response yet. We have the right to have a free exit in our area.

Guys, The whole SALIK idea has lost its purpose. Personally i think that the 400 dirhams,i pay every month for my both cars,is a total loss especially with no benefit in return. I spend 45 minutes everyday to get home from mall of emirates.

It is not a matter of complaining and whining about AED 350 per month but it is a matter of having an alternative road!! @Andrew, public transport is another choice, but even walking to the metro station is a nightmare!!
  • Andrew 16 April 2011 11:24 0 0
You people should use public transport and shelf away your cars.

Most people are seemingly too dense to see the downside of forcing people to use Salik. As Judith said, wouldnt forcing people to use Salik roads, actually defeat purpose of Salik which was to reduce traffic on SZR? Yes tenants can afford Dh350 a month, but whats the point of increasing traffic on SZR?

3- cuurently Salik doesn't charge if you pass by Al Safa and Al Barsha Gates within an hour, so RTA should make the same rule for people who pass the same gate within a specific time interval. People, stop whining! You live in this country free of tax with high incomes. I don't see you complaining about your 60-70% tax on income!

1- I use Al Khail Road everyday and there is an entry to and exit from Business Bay (so alternate road is available even if you want to go to Emaar square but it'll take you longer). 2- If you can afford a 100k apartment why complain about Dh350? I use Al Khail Road to work and on the way back SZR and it doesn't cost me Dh100 per month.

Salik, supposedly, was introduced to lessen traffic on Sheikh Zayed Roadd, not to force people to use the same. Construction here and there, it might take half a year or more to sort the issues. Meanwhile for those forced to use it, sad reality.

If you have to go to Mall Of emirates using SZR from from Ex tower you have to pay salik at Safa then go all the way to the French Bakery or World Trade Center and take a U turn and pay Safa salik again. All within 5 minutes. I do not agree with Mr. Punjabi that there are alternate routes. We have cars not SUVs to cover dirt tracks.

Guys, why crib about things? Is there any output?
  • WD 14 April 2011 13:41 0 0
Please at least reopen the small road that was there before!
  • WD 14 April 2011 13:41 0 0
I have emailed Dubai asset management and I have complained to RTA... reached nowhere. I have tried to find other roads to avoid using Salik, no other alternative route is available. It's not a matter of affording or not, but there should be another route available other than Salik; compared to other Salik toll gates Executive Towers residents should have an alternative. The closure of the road started from beginning of March and up till today no other route has been made!

Completely agree with Najwa, people working in Emaar Square, which is around 1.5 kms away, have to pay for Salik and while returning home take a 10 km ride by taking a u-turn from second interchange.
  • Najwa 14 April 2011 12:10 0 0
I have to pay Salik every time I leave my place at Executive Towers because it is the only exit available. Ironically, I work in Emaar Square and it is 5 minutes away from my building so technically I only use Sheikh Zayed Road for 20 seconds of my total trip time and yet I pay for Salik!
  • Shamoon 14 April 2011 09:40 0 0
There was a nice exit by the small roundabout next to the Millenium Apartment building which houses Emirates crew. I don't know why that's been shut! It was a nice access to Dubai Mall, Downtown and the nearby grocery stores. I request RTA to at least re-open that bit.

Going by Anthony's logic, anyone who drives a car can 'afford' Dh16 a day. In fact, anyone who drives a Mercedes can afford Dh100 a day. But is it right?
  • James 14 April 2011 09:10 0 0
Salik is not convenient to use. They should give one month time if your Salik is empty to fill it, or make an arrangement with etisalt and du to withdraw from your prepaid account the fees. I have no problem with money, but because of my irritation filling my Salik, I got fined over Dh3,000 already. That's no good.
  • Anthony 14 April 2011 07:45 0 0
Well! If they can stay in Business Bay, they shell out Dh16 per day!
