Katrina Kaif tops Yahoo! search charts

It should surprise no one that the most popular woman in India is Katrina Kaif.

The British actress topped searches at Yahoo! India in 2010, making her the most popular newsmaker online.

She trailed the Indian Premier League in a year that has seen events supersede celebrities.

The search engine said Kaif was top of the search charts for both personal and professional reasons. These included an acclaimed performance in the film "Rajneeti", a mystery stomach ailment and a very public break-up with long time beau Salman Khan.

The next most popular celebrity online in India was cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who broke several records this year.

Apart from Bollywood and cricket, controversies dominated the rankings: the Commonwealth Games (facilities for which seemed they would never be ready), former minister Shashi Tharoor (who lost his job following a cricket ownership scandal) and a sex scandal involving the religious conman Swami Nithyananda.

Yahoo! develops the list by analysing search queries based on a number of factors, including absolute volume and the growth from previous periods, to see which themes and trends bubble to the surface.
