Lanka MP’s ‘beauty’ derails transport minister

Published

In Sri Lanka politics, beauty has its place.

Rosie Senanayake is a former Miss World and Mrs World, and now UNP MP. This, according to some Lankan politicos makes dealing with her in parliament difficult.

Minister of Transport Kumara Welagama was quoted as saying to opposition MP Senanayake: “Your beauty is mesmerising and I am choking unable to answer you.”

He then added, “I feel so lucky today because in my 19 years in politics, it’s only today, a beauty queen is questioning me.”

The obvious impressions she made on the minister was obvious as he continued: “I am gifted to answer her and I will not answer questions looking at the deputy speaker but at the beauty's face.

“When I see her, my thoughts are running riots which I don’t want to reveal to the public,” the minister said.

Not fazed one bit by the outpouring of appreciation, Senanayake, who has also served as her country's High Commissioner in Malaysia, said: “I count such statements as insults. Rather than looking at my beauty please look in to the questions I pose.”

Kandy’s 17-year old female ‘Robin Hood’

A 17-year old girl has arrested by the police for alleged thefts in many houses in Kandy in the Katugastota area, according to a report in Virakesari.lk.

According to Katugastota police she had a habit of breaking into only houses of the very rich and stealing jewellery and other expensive items, drawing comparisons to ‘Robin Hood’.

It was not clear if she distributed her ill-gotten wealth to the poor though.

Orginally from Chillaw, the young woman came to Katugastota after she had been linked to many crimes and has been in the wanted list by the Chilaw police.

Katugastota police revealed she has been operating alone.
