New fatwa okays birth control steps

No permanent measures advisable, says Fatwa Centre

Couples can choose to adopt birth control measures under mutual agreement to limit the number of children, according to the latest fatwa issued by the Centre of the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments in Abu Dhabi.

The measures adopted must be legitimate such as isolation or use of drugs not harmful to the body, however, couples cannot use permanent birth control steps, reported 'Al Khaleej' newspaper.

Such a step can be taken only if both the spouses agree to the same and the effects are temporary, the Fatwa Centre said in response to a query by a mother of three kids. The woman, who claims to enjoy good health, wanted to know the legal methods of birth control as she did not want to have more children. She said that she wanted to give the best education and offer quality life to her kids, which would not be possible if she were to have any more as the cost of living is increasing.

A fatwā is not automatically part of Islamic teachings. While the person issuing it may intend to represent the teachings of Islam accurately, this does not mean that that person's interpretation will gain universal acceptance. This means that there are numerous contradictory fatwā, prescribing or proscribing a certain behaviour. This puts the burden of choice on the individual Muslim, who, in case of conflict, will have to decide whose opinion is more likely to be correct.

All oral contraceptive pills are certainly have long term adverse effects and thus can be termed harmful to the body....

I fully support the fatwa, as it does not talk about permanent birth control.

I understand the reasons behind the fatwa is mainly the economic justification. However, one should not forget that God is great and provides food and shelter to everyone. A council of scholars comprising different religious sects should agree to the fatwa.

i agreed with hamed, I saw in past that some scholars declared it acceptable and others not. i think it should be well discussed with other scholars i will must say with Ajam scholars as well.

I think Fatwa should be well studied and not declared without consultation with various scholars.
