The mean age of heart attacks in Dubai is 49, compared to 62 in the USA, a health expert has warned.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Dr. Nooshin Bazargani, Cardiologist at the Dubai Health Authority, and Board Member of the Emirates Cardiac Society and World Heart Federation said that cardiovascular disease is a major risk here in the country.

“It’s the leading cause of death at 38 per cent, followed by injuries at 21 per cent and cancer at 12 per cent.

“Cardiology also accounts for the top three admissions in Dubai hospitals, and nearly half of the cases that are admitted to the cardiology department are due to acute heart attacks,” she said.

She pointed out that expatriates lead the list of those affected while up to 20 per cent of the patients are nationals.

If you’re in your 30s, make sure you have your health in check, particularly your heart.

Even better if you started in your 20s and maintained the workouts and healthy eating habits, because the ages of those being admitted to our hospitals due to heart disease is startling.

Dr. Bazargani pointed out that unless the person was born with a birth defect or congenital disease, heart disease is preventable.

“Firstly, you will need to understand the root cause of the illness, one that’s closely related to your lifestyle.”

The cardiologist explained how you can avoid a premature death by avoiding the specifics.

“The top three risk factors for heart attacks are: diabetes mellitus, hypertension and all kinds of tobacco, ” says Dr. Bazargani.

She added: “It involves controlling the various illnesses that can lead to heart disease. Individuals who reach the age of 35 must get tested at least once a year for their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, according to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

“Most importantly, exercise is crucial for healthy individuals and those who have experienced a heart attack.”

Dr. Bazargani also advised a 30 minutes of brisk walking, at least five times a week.

Every September 29, since the year 2000, we’re reminded about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, when World Heart Day spreads global awareness that heart disease and stroke are the world’s main causes of death that claims 17.3 million lives each year.

It’s a day related to your heart - the most important part of our body that keeps us going in life, but let that be a healthy one.
