For Keralities in the UAE, celebrating Eid or Onam back home this year may be too expensive as weekend fares on Dubai-Kochi route has soared to as high as Dh6,600 per ticket.

And if you are lucky and you manage to find it online, the cheapest fare would be not less than Dh3,000 during August-September period.

Travel agents say Emirates flights to Kochi are fully booked for August, tickets are available on Jet Airways, but only on connecting flights.

The Dubai-Mumbai-Kochi and Kochi-Mumbai-Dubai flight is currently the least expensive at Dh3,000 (checked on August 8 at 08.16 UAE time), but return fares could rise as high as Dh6,600 if you are travelling on a Friday on Dubai-Delhi-Kochi route.

Agents say even return fares on Srilankan Airline (Dubai-Colombo-Kochi) are not below Dh3,300, while prices on Qatar Airways start from Dh3,600.

Saleem K, who works with a PR company in Dubai, told Emirates 24|7:

“Last week, we just decided to fly to Kochi to celebrate Eid, but after checking the fares, we have cancelled our plan.”

He added: “The fares so steep that even if I can afford to pay I won’t pay. Rather, I would spend a portion of that in Dubai and enjoy my Eid here.”

Ravi Kurup, manager at a trading company in Jebel Ali, also has postponed his vacation because fares are quite high.

“I went to book three tickets after Eid so we (wife and three-year-old kid) could celebrate Onam (August 29) in India, but fares were not at all affordable. I can’t spend over Dh10,000 just on tickets and hence we cancelled our plan,” he revealed.
