Dubai Municipality’s inspection team has found that only 4 per cent of the food establishments did not meet the hygiene requirements.

The inspection campaign carried out recently by the Animal Products Control Section of the Food Control Department of Dubai Municipality in the food establishments in Dubai has shown positive results of achieving the goal ensuring the health and food safety in Dubai.

Sultan Ali Al Tahir, Acting Head of Product Control Section said that 239 visits were carried out to those institutions and found that 94% of them meet the hygiene requirements.

"We issued 161 fines and 78 warnings. In the assessment, 57 establishments got very good and 171 good. The establishments that earned a rating of average and weak were only 8 or 4 per cent of the establishments visited during the campaign," he said.
The campaign concentrated on the establishments trading in food products, especially during the month of Ramadan as there is increased demand for food during this month. Due to this fact, it requires more intensive supervision in order to ensure that the foodstuff reach the consumer intact as it was the people's right to expect that the food they eat is safe and suitable for consumption. Food-borne diseases and the damage resulted from it must be upsetting, but it may be fatal too. There are also many other outcomes that may result from eating unhealthy food or unfit for consumption.

During the campaign in the warehouses, 91 visits were conducted and 35 fines and 56 notices were issued to the erring warehouses. A total of 6 per cent warehouses were not compliant with hygiene rules and they were rated average, and 94% obtained an assessment rate of good and very good.

The most significant violations during the campaign was the general cleanliness inside the warehouses, followed by improper storage and the methods not suitable for storage, such as accumulation of items and then ventilation and light in the warehouse in conformity with Dubai Municipality instructions, and existence of some of the workers in those institutions without health cards.

The campaign in consumer cooperatives and hypermarkets was conducted in order to ascertain its compliance with the hygiene requirements, focusing on products that are in great demand during the holy month. The extent of their commitment to the conditions of storage, cleaning and application of personnel commitment to these requirements were checked. The main objective was to ensure the health and safety of the food that reaches the consumer because these warehouses are the primary tributary of the food establishments and consumers and food safety in these establishments will have impact on most of the segments of the society.
