New signal at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque entrance

In line with its plan to develop a sustainable and integrated transport network on a par with the best international standards, the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee in Abu Dhabi, STSC, has announced the completion of the installation of a traffic signal at the entrance to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque on Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street, also known as Airport Road.

The project was implemented by the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi under the supervision of the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee, and it aims to ensure the smooth flow of traffic in front of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at peak hours, particularly Friday prayers, the Holy Month of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha festivities.

The traffic signal, which will operate at peak times, helps provide easier and smoother arrival of worshippers and visitors from outside the city of Abu Dhabi to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as it allows turning to the left in front of the Mosque entrance to Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street and also allowing a full turn (U-Turn). Visitors leaving the Mosque may drive direct to downtown Abu Dhabi by turning left at the exit.

In addition, the work included expansion of the bus stop to accommodate the parking of three buses to drop off or pick up passengers at the same time, which will facilitate the movement of passengers and ease the arrival of the largest possible number of visitors to the Mosque at the appropriate time.

Khalid Al Suwaidi, Surface Transport Advisor and Acting General Manager at the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi, said, "The introduction of the traffic signal at the entrance of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a strategic project undertaken by the DoT through the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee. The project aims to facilitate traffic to and from the Mosque, especially at peak times during Ramadan and the two Eid prayers, where the number of visitors to the Mosque is expected to double whether from Abu Dhabi city or beyond."
