Although a Friday tradition, the well-known cattle market of Nizwa, Oman attracted hundreds of people eager to gain a last-minute bargain last week.

Opportunities were aplenty in this small town around 150km away from Muscat.

From towns and villages of the Western Hajar region, men, women and children gather in Nizwa every Friday to sell or buy their cattle.

Cows, buffalos, goats, sheep and poultry become one with an animated crowd.

The arena forms the centre point where the cattle are shown; the farmer makes make a round amidst a bidding audience. When the highest bid has been heard, the farmer pulls and pushes the animal into the audience and hands it over to the new owner.

But also on the sidelines arrangements are made. Between the cows, under a tree, or on the phone.

A good cow costs around Dh2,000, says a farmer who sold the same cow he bought two months ago.

The healthier the animal looks, the higher the price. "The horns of the animal should be intact, that is very important," explains the same farmer.

The market starts just after midnight and continues till well into the Friday afternoon, when the exhausted men yet have to pull one string; moving the stubborn cattle into the vehicle.

Remaining are amused local villagers with a big grin on their faces.

Oman is ready for Eid al Adha.
