Dubai police seized 102 cars involved in races on the emirate’s busy roads in just two months, while hundreds of other vehicles were also impounded for jumping the red lights and going in the wrong direction, according to police statistics.

Police also confiscated 171 vehicles with fake plates after their drivers tampered with the numbers so they will not pay fines or to shun speed cameras on the roads.

“We are not being tough for the sake of toughness but we will not tolerate any one endangering lives on our roads,” Dubai’s police chief Major General Khamis Matar Al Mazinah said, quoted by the Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm'.

His figures showed 102 cars were confiscated by the police during June-July after they were caught racing on busy roads, including Sheikh Zayed, Mohammed Bin Zayed and Emirates motorways, as well as Jumeirah, Qusais, Mamzar and other internal roads.

The offences also included jumping the red light, driving in the wrong direction and on the road’s hard shoulders and pavements, and reckless maneuvering on the roads.

A total 937 vehicles, including 127 motorcycles, were seized by the Dubai police during that period for committing such dangerous offences, Mazinah said.
