Seventeen children were sexually abused in Dubai in 2013, more than a third of the reported cases involving the use of violence against kids.

Official data showed most of the cases involving children suffering from violence at home and other places in 2013 were boys and they involved beating, torture, sexual abuse, manipulation and negligence by families.

“Seventeen of the 48 abuse cases reported to us last year involved sexual offences,” said Bushra Hussein Qayed, Director, Women, Children and Youth section at the Community Development Authority in Dubai.

She told the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily Al Khaleej that all the cases were reported through the authority’s hotline 800988 and that they involved children under 18 years old of all nationalities. “The figures include only reported cases. We receive reports round the clock on that telephone number but not all cases are recorded.”
