23,560 traffic offences commited a day in UAE

UAE drivers committed 8.6 million traffic offences in 2013, a whopping daily average of nearly 23,560 violations, according to the interior ministry.

Speeding accounted for nearly half the offences and Abu Dhabi motorists were the largest offenders, followed by those in Dubai, the ministry’s statistics showed.

Speed offences totaled 4.3 million while there were 338,000 violations involving failure by drivers to stick to lane and nearly 85,000 offences for using the mobile phone  while driving, showed the figures, published in the Arabic language daily Al Bayan.

Abu Dhabi, the largest UAE emirate by area, recorded around 4.1 million offences while road violations in Dubai stood at 2.4 million. Sharjah came third, with around 1.1 million, followed by Ras Al Khaimah with 780,000 offences, Ajman with 290,000 offences, Fujeirah with around 210,000 violations and Umm Al Quwain with 180,000 offences.
