Just as you need to spruce your so-called traditional CV, your LinkedIn profile should also be updated. You have to treat it differently and seriously from other social networking websites, like Facebook, if you want to be taken seriously by employers, recruiters and the contacts on your networking list.

Here are some tips that you need to keep in mind as you update your profile.

1# Have a latest profile picture

Make sure that your profile picture is recent and a professional one too. Just as you would do for a traditional CV, avoid using a decade-old photo or one that is personal and casual on your LinkedIn profile.

Avoid uploading a selfie. Have someone else take your picture so it can leave a good impression on those who look at it. The ideal one should be coloured, clear and without friends, kids or pets.

2# List all your relevant information

All the information that you provide here should be given keeping in mind the ultimate goal of marketing yourself. So, list all your qualifications, experience, skills, awards that portray you as the best possible professional and employee to be hired.

Do not miss out on any niche skills that you may have and list all kinds of specialties, even if they are not integral to the industry you work in.

3# Don’t just list, explain

As you list your previous jobs and projects, take the time to explain it as well, but keep it relevant.

You can add links of any noteworthy projects that you’ve been a part of. All this add to your credentials as a professional. Always revisit your profile at regular intervals. Do not miss out on any new skill and job that needs to be added.

4# Add the extras

These may be considered the extras, but are just as relevant as your core information.

These include any charitable or social work that you may have undertaken. This can also mean your adventure of climbing the Mount Kilimanjaro or being part of successful marathon running group.

5# Get recommendations and endorsements too

Just as you would provide references with your traditional CV, it’s a good idea to get recommendation on LinkedIn as well.

Endorsements and recommendations is a way of complementing and confirming the skills of people you believe are worthy of it and vice-versa.

These are small ways to prove that others are willing to vouch for your professional claims and interested recruiters are likely to read them if they go to your profile.
