A US citizen who had been kidnapped 12 years ago was found alive in Mexico, officials revealed.

The girl, who was four years old in 2002, was reported missing by her father from Texas, US. The girl was found along with her 44-year-old mother in a town south of Mexico City, reports KTBC-TV.

The pair were brought back to the US with the help of multiple law enforcement agencies - the FBI, US Marshals Office and Mexican Police.

The girl has been kept in an undisclosed location and undergoing care.

The two had fled the country when in 2000, after the girls' parents separated, the father of the child was given custody. The mother feared that the father would get sole custody and hence abducted her and left the country.

The duo were spotted many times in Mexico in the past but they managed to flee before the officials could zero in on them.

According to reports, there had been a $20,000 reward for the child's safe return.
